How To Update A Bathroom With Pink Wall Tile

By Angela Glancy

If you’ve got an older home with a pink tiled bathroom you may feel like you’re living in a ‘1960 something’ time warp. Pink tiled walls were all the rage back then, but it can be very hard to work with pink when you want to bring your bathroom into the current millennium. While your first instinct might be to rip it all out, this solution is the most labor-intensive and the most costly. There are other ways of dealing with your outdated bathroom.

Here are some strategies you may want to consider when updating your bathroom with tiles.

1. Why not paint the tile?

Painting tile is not as easy as painting the walls, but it can be done. The important thing to keep in mind is that tiles surfaces are glossy; so in order to make the paint adhere, the tile needs to be roughed up a bit. Use a fine grit sandpaper to lightly dull the surface; your goal is just to take enough of the shine off so the paint will stick. Next, wipe the tile down with a damp cloth to removed the dust residue and add two coats of a primer that is formulated for ceramic. Each primer coat will need to dry for 8-10 hours. Finally, paint on your new color with a high-gloss bathroom paint; this type of paint will resist moisture and give your walls the most attractive finish.

2. Go for a retro look

You could just make the best of the hand you’ve been dealt – decoratively speaking – and add other accents that capture a nostalgic 50’s or 60’s vibe. Antique and resale stores and estate sales are good sources for vintage pieces or choose new pieces from contemporary stores that have been designed with retro flair. From magazine wall racks to light fixtures to towels and counter-top accessories, you can make your pink walls the best supporting player in your retro-inspired bathroom decor.

3. Modernize

You can take a totally different tack and ignore the nostalgic roots of your pink bathroom. Modernize it with colors that will make it fresh and current. A modern color scheme like pink-silver-and-white or pink-black-and-sage will make you look like a hip and savvy trendsetter.

4. Make it Glam

Embrace the feminine nature of your pink bathroom and make it a shrine to glamorous girly-girl decor. Bring in a small scaled crystal chandelier, a luxurious faux fur floor rug, a satin shower curtain, posh monogrammed towels and silver counter-top accessories. A beautiful art-deco style makeup vanity topped with a tray of your favorite perfumes, lotions and make up brushes provides the perfect finishing touch. When approaching your pink bathroom, look at it with a fresh eye and think about what type of bathroom would make you feel pampered and happy. Gather some ideas from your favorite decor magazines and websites and then figure out a way to pull pink tile into the mix.
