You should know that the 1 year to 18 month accelerated nursing programs are also known as “second-degree” programs. You will have had to have graduated already from another degree program. Keep in mind also that along with a previous degree, accelerated nursing programs will want to know that you are going to take your studies seriously. To this end, you will need to come into the program with at least a 3.0 GPA. This shows that you actually took the time to learn the material that you obtained a degree for the first time.
Also keep in mind that with accelerated degree programs, you need to have a previous degree because of the structure of the program. This isn’t going to be for college beginners. You will need to have classes that can be transferred and used in for your accelerated BSN.
You will want to have already taken some basic courses that can be used for nursing. For example, you should do an overview of the science courses that you have taken, such as anatomy, or biology. These requirements will be needed for accelerated nursing programs. Look up your previous course history as this will be needed when you enrol into and Accelerated BSN program.
Say for example that you’ve completed a social science course already as part of earning your first degree. If you have taken that course, you will not have to do it over, which is great. If not, you’ll have to complete it as part of your accelerated BSN requirements. Most degree programs have overlapping subject areas and the same applies with nursing. By giving you the credit for completing these already you can cut out a lot of the doubling up that usually occurs when you pursue a second degree.
Different accelerated nursing programs are going to vary with regards to specific requirements. The one that is right for you will be your decision. Make sure that whatever program you decide to chose, you chose one that is fully accredited, and will help you pass the NCLEX-RN, and prepare you for the joys and challenges of your new exciting nursing career.
Again, before you complete any of the accelerated nursing programs, you need to complete another degree first. You have to meet minimum GPA requirements, and you have to have some prerequisite course requirements met. If you do enough checking around, you’ll be sure to find the program that is right for you.
